Resources for Self-Publishers

If you’d like to work with a company that will handle the full conversion and distribution process for you, these are a few that we have worked with in various capacities:

Page Two Strategies: Consulting company that will provide publishing advice and services to authors of non-fiction and non-publishing entities.

Iguana Books: Company based in Toronto that enables authors to self-publish their books in digital format. They will convert your book into the format required for an ebook (ePUB) and distribute it to different retailers (like Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble) worldwide for you.

If you have someone on your team who is technologically-adept and can convert your books into ePUB format, you can explore these options:

Osmora: Montreal-based company that provides a relatively simple converter to get your book into ePUB format, and can also handle distribution to retailers. Their basic ePUB converter is free to use, and they can do more complex projects for a fee.

Press Books: A Canadian-based service that provides templates for designing ebooks and typeset PDFs. Authors and publishers can either create the book themselves, or have Press Books’ staff do the design work. They also offer digital distribution services.

For distribution, you can sign up independently with Kobo, Apple and Amazon:

Kobo Writing Life: KWL enables you to upload your book file in ePUB or Mobi format, or from a Word or Text file, and converts it into an ePUB, free of charge. You can set your prices and rights and all of the other metadata through an online form, and distribute the book to Kobo’s digital bookstores across the world.

Kindle Direct Publishing: The KDP system will convert your book into Mobi, Amazon’s proprietary format, free of charge, and enable you to sell the book on the Amazon site across the world.

Apple iBookstore: Sign up for iTunes Connect, and then you can create and submit books through the iTunes Producer app, to sell on the iBookstore around the world.

There are a lot of companies out there that provide conversion services if you’d like to have a professional convert your book into ePUB format. A few that we have worked with, and can recommend are as follows:

Bright Wing Books: Based in Vancouver, very detail-oriented conversion company.

Aptara: Conversion company with its head office in the US, but conversion work is done overseas.
